How to Develop Yourself Professionally?

professional development

While there are many articles out there about professional development and how you can improve your personality in a matter of days or months, there are none that prepares you to take up the task truly. Most experts tend to ignore that improving oneself is difficult psychology because we almost always tend to deny that we lack something.

Improving yourself can be challenging, especially for working adults who have spent all their lives in a specific manner. Unlike hard skills, soft skills are difficult to measure and differ from person to person. Having said that, there are certain recognised norms that distinguish what’s appropriate and what is a big “no-no.”  Your technical skills are crucial, but you are ultimately judged based on your personality. While you can always take up training and development programs, none of it can indeed work unless you are open to change. Here are a few tips that can help you:

Start yourself:

Be it communication, or courtesy and business etiquette, being trained is your best option, but it is not fruitful unless you are someone who identifies and accepts your own mistakes. Studies show that it is not the people who are at the bottom of the charts that fail to improve, those in denial of their shortcomings who have no room left for improvement.

Always be a critic to correct yourself and improve on your mistakes. A person, who thinks that he knows everything, cannot learn anything new.

It is a conscious effort:

Anyone who told you “it comes naturally” is wrong. Improving yourself is a conscious effort, you have to make a conscious decision to correct yourself when wrong. It can be something as small as correcting something you have been pronouncing wrong your entire life or as complicated as changing your attitude towards something you have been dealing in the wrong way.

Say goodbye to embarrassment:

Statistics show that personal growth is stifled in 78% of people with the fear of embarrassment. They are unable to work on improving themselves because they feel they might humiliate themselves.

In all honesty, this fear, for many people, is part and parcel of the deal, and they have to let go of it, to develop genuinely. It can be challenging to work on yourself under the scrutiny of others, but work you must, no matter the audience.

It is not wrong to fail but is worse never to try. Moreover, who knows, seeing you fail and get back and try again, might inspire others around you to let go and do the same.

It takes practice:

Though clichéd rightly said, practice makes perfect. Learning is the easier part, the discipline to practice what you have learned again and again to build a routine, takes time. Ideally, it takes 66 days to develop a habit. So your pattern of not being punctual might take about 66 days of punctuality to break.

Lastly, nothing ever truly happened overnight. Improving yourself takes conscious dedication. No matter what you are personally striving for there’s no doubt that continuous self-development is extremely important to reach your end goals.
